Organizations across the Wagoner community are coming together to plan the 21st annual Family Fun Day in May. The event will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5th at Maple Park. The purpose of the event is to provide a day of free fun for the families of the Wagoner community and more importantly, to create face-to-face relationships between local service providers, churches, organizations and individuals who may benefit from these organizations.
Ed James, co-chairman of the event, said the event has been very successful in previous years.
“This event has introduced the citizens of Wagoner to local churches and faith-based organizations as well as familiarized them with the various state and federally funded helps organizations that are available to them,” said James. “Family Fun Day allows citizens the opportunity to begin building face-to-face relationships and gaining exposure to organizations that could potentially provide future benefit for them.”
John Jones, who is also co-chairman of the event, said they believe once an individual or family has a friendly face attached to an agency or church, they are more likely to ask for help earlier on in the event of a crisis.
“We anticipate this year's event being larger than ever and hope that even more organizations will be able to participate,” said Jones. “Last year close to 1,500 individuals attended and we were able to provide a free, fun, informative day to the Wagoner community.”
Free fun is definitely the theme of FFD, which provides a day full of food, drinks, games, entertainment, inflatables and drawing for door prizes. The event is sponsored by local merchants and organizations, which allow it to be offered free to the public. Informative booths will be set up by CREOKS Behavioral Health Service, Grand Lake Mental Health Center, Wagoner Police Department, Wagoner Fire Department and Wagoner EMS, the Cherokee Nation and Muscogee (Creek) Nation as well as various Oklahoma Department of Human Services organizations for parents to get more information on these support organizations.
James said his prayer is that more people attend to ensure that more relationships are developed.
“I also hope that the event runs smoothly in light of our tremendous growth,” said James. “We are working hard to incorporate best practices and suggestions by others to ensure that any issues faced in the past are rectified and our hope is that more organizations participate and showcase their services and benefits for our Wagoner families.”
James said they are asking organizations and churches to be at the park and set-up by 9:00 a.m. on May 5th. For more information or to fill out an event registration form, contact Ed James at edjames59@gmail.com.
